4th Grade: Who we are and what we do!

Robert Demerjian

My name is Robert Demerjian. I grew up in Roslindale but currently live in Plymouth with my wife and two kids.  I love to write songs and play the piano and guitar. I started taking classical piano lessons when I was 9 but abandoned it at the age of 13 in order to play rock n' roll.  I grew up on my sibling's Beatles and Zombies records and my parent's Big Band era music and all that gave me an appreciation for music from other time periods. Since I was pretty young, I loved to read and write   One of my all time favorite children's books is Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt and one of my all time favorite books for adults is Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison.

I got my start in teaching as a Kindergarten teacher in Weymouth.  After doing my student teaching in Quincy, I came to Boston. My first 11 years in BPS were spent at the Lee School in Dorchester.  I taught 4th, 5th, and K2 there. I loved it but when I got a chance to come to the Manning in JP, it felt like coming home and I couldn't resist.  I loved the school's mission of inclusion and vision of success for all students. After 8 years at the Manning, I feel home even at work. It is a wonderful feeling to be part of the school's community.

Someday, when I am retired, I hope to have a home daycare for babies and toddlers.  I LOVE TINY PEOPLE!!! My own kids are getting older and older and it is giving me an appreciation for time and the idea of making memories count.  For all of you parents reading this, you know what I am talking about! You blink and, boom, they're as tall as you! Anyway, daycare or not, that is all in the future.  For now, I am enjoying working with my new and wonderful co- teacher, Cassie. She, along with our superstar para Mr. Green, make coming to work even more special than it has been in many years.

Cassie Alexander-Zack

Mrs. Alexander-Zack, or as her students know her, Mrs. A.Z., grew up in Amherst, and after graduating from UMass Amherst, moved to Boston, where she taught at a non-profit preschool in the South End. She has been at the Manning since earning her Masters degree in 2014 from Wheelock College. Mrs. A.Z. began at the Manning as a student teacher in K2 and 1st grade. Upon graduating, she took a job as the paraprofessional in K2, wanting to stay at the Manning as long as she could. "I love the small, close-knit community of the Manning. It helps to create a strong bond between staff and students that continues throughout their years at the Manning." This year is Mrs. A.Z.'s first year as a teacher in the 4th grade classroom, and coincidentally got to teach the same class she student taught in 1st grade. Forming relationships with each student individually is very important to Mrs. A.Z. She believes that when students know that their teachers are truly there to help them do their best and support them along the way, they are more confident and motivated they are in themselves.
